TOP 5 BUSIEST PORTS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

1. Singapore: Singapore Port (SGSIN)

Singapore Port is not only the busiest port in Southeast Asia but also one of the busiest ports in the world. Singapore Port is a leading global shipping hub and an important component of the Singapore economy. In addition to possessing advanced infrastructure, modern facilities and a highly skilled workforce, this allows the port to handle over 36 million TEU of cargo per year, providing a wide range of other maritime services including ship repair, maintenance and logistics services. 2. Indonesia: Tanjung Priok Port (IDTPP)

Tanjung Priok Port is one of the largest trading hubs in Southeast Asia. The port is not only a place to handle and transport containers but also bulk and roll-on/roll-off cargo. It is the most modern and busiest seaport in Indonesia, handling more than 50% of the total cargo traffic in the country. It is also one of the main distribution centers in Indonesia with a system of more than 100 berths and modern facilities along with a network of highways, railways and airports around it.

3. Thailand: Laem Chabang Port (THLCH)

Laem Chabang Port is a major gateway for trade between Thailand and the world. The system of 30 berths and advanced handling facilities are connected to the network of highways, railways and airports to create the best conditions for transporting goods. The port also invests heavily to expand many other maritime services to attract more major shipping lines from around the world.

Currently, the port has been and is expanding to be able to handle up to 18 million containers per year. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2029. This will boost the growth plans of the eastern region of Thailand as well as support existing manufacturing industries, including electronics and automobiles. As the third largest gateway port in the world, the expansion of Laem Chabang Port is expected to increase its important role in the Thai economy in the coming time.

4. Malaysia: Port Klang (MYPKG)

Port Klang, located in Malaysia, is an important hub for trade in Southeast Asia. The port can handle both containerized, breakbulk and roll-on/roll-off cargo.

The port is managed by the Port Klang Authority and has a total of 54 berths with a total length of nearly 12km. Of these, twelve are dedicated to containerized cargo and are capable of handling vessels from 40,000 to 160,000 DWT. Despite the difficulties and challenges during the covid pandemic, the port still managed to handle a record volume of 13.74 million TEUs in 2020, accounting for 38% of the total international cargo volume in Malaysia. This demonstrates the strong connectivity of Port Klang with more than 120 countries and more than 500 ports worldwide.

5. Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh Port (VNSGN)

With a capacity of handling more than 10 million tons of cargo per year, Ho Chi Minh Port is not only the leading port in the maritime industry of Vietnam but also one of the largest ports in Southeast Asia. It serves the import and export needs of the southern region of the country, including Ho Chi Minh City, neighboring areas and the Mekong Delta and plays an important role in promoting economic development.

You're undoubtedly familiar with the term "Bill of Lading (B/L)" — a key document in ocean shipping.

Let's explore the main types of Bills of Lading you’ll often encounter. ⚓

🧾 1. Original Bill of Lading

🚢 This is a bill of lading issued by the freight forwarder (FWD) or shipping company.
It’s usually issued in three originals: 👉 First Original, Second Original, and Third Original, often accompanied by three copies.

📌 Conditions for Receiving Goods Based on Original Bills of Lading:

• If the shipper holds the original bill, they must send all three originals to the consignee. Missing even one makes it invalid.
• The consignee must bring the original B/L to the destination port to receive the goods. However, this process can take time and cost, so many companies now use Telex Bills or Seaway Bills to speed things up.

⚠️ What if the Original Bill of Lading is lost?
• Losing it is a big issue — the shipping company won’t release the goods.
• You’ll have to pay a cash guarantee of 150% of the cargo value, and the carrier will retain the goods for two years.

❌ Disadvantages:
• Time-consuming: If the consignee hasn’t received the originals when the vessel arrives, cargo pickup is delayed.
• Possible courier fees and risk of document loss.

💻 2. Telex Bill of Lading (Surrendered B/L)

The Telex B/L solves many issues of the Original B/L, making it easier for both shipper and consignee.

✅ Advantages:
• Even without the original B/L, the consignee can still collect the cargo easily.

❌ Disadvantages:
• Telex release fees may apply.
• If dealing with an unreliable FWD, you may face delays or DEM/DET charges if the telex release isn’t sent.

🌊 3. Seaway Bill (SWB)

📃 A Seaway Bill is issued by the shipping line or FWD after full payment of freight.
It’s a non-negotiable document, not issued in original form, and not a title of goods — used mainly for straight B/Ls.

🏢 Common use cases:
• Internal shipments between subsidiaries
• Transactions without letters of credit
• Issued immediately after vessel departure and full payment confirmation

🛳️ The consignee can collect goods upon arrival without presenting any B/L or telex release.
💡 Unlike Telex Bills, Seaway Bills have no extra fees, though some carriers require payment after vessel departure to apply a free SWB.
🚫 Note: Some countries (e.g., Mexico, Brazil) prohibit the use of Seaway Bills.

🚢 What does it mean when a container is rolled?

When a shipper is informed by a shipping line that a container has been rolled, it means the container has not been loaded onto the scheduled vessel and must wait for the next vessel. ⏳

⚙️ Causes of roll-on/roll-off:

🔹 Excessive pre-orders (some pre-orders must wait for another voyage).
🔹 The vessel fails to arrive at the port as planned.
🔹 Vessel loading capacity.

BILL OF LADING (B/L) – KNOWLEDGE YOU NEED TO KNOW!

1. B/L No.: CULVSHK2251818 - This number is set by the shipping line (bill of lading issuer) according to regulations. The bill of lading number is used to look up the B/L, look up the shipment and declare customs

2. Shipper: FOSHAN YILIN TRADING CO.,LTD - Name of party sending the goods to the shipping line to transport the goods, this can be the exporter (or have an export license)

3. Consignee: BIGSUN IMPORT EXPORT LIMITED COMPANY - Name of the buyer, importer

4. Notify party: SAME AS CONSIGNEE - The shipping line will send an Arrival Notice (AN) when the goods arrive at the destination port to whom mentioned in this party, specifically the consignee - BIGSUN

5. Vessel name, voyage number: CUL HUIZHOU/ 2244W
This is the proper name of the cargo vessel and the code of this voyage. Used for tracking (looking up) the shipment and customs declaration

6. Port of loading: SHEKOU - Name of the port of loading (loading cargo on board) in the exporting country

7. Port of receipt: SHEKOU, CHINA - Name of the port of loading for transport in case of receiving goods inland

8. Port of discharge: HAIPHONG, VIETNAM - Name of the port of discharge (unloading cargo from vessel) in the importing country.
