🇻🇳 Hanoi doesn't rush to impress you : it reveals itself slowly, through narrow Old Quarter streets, the smell of star anise drifting from pho stalls, and motorbikes weaving past thousand-year-old temples. It's a city built on contradiction: French colonial villas beside crumbling shophouses, ancient pagodas a few steps from third-wave coffee shops. That mix is exactly what makes it worth slowing down for.

✍ If you're planning a trip, here's what actually helps once you're there.

Where to start.** The Old Quarter is Hanoi's beating heart: 36 streets, each historically tied to a trade, still buzzing with market stalls, cafes, and street vendors. From there, Hoan Kiem Lake is an easy walk, especially at sunrise when locals gather for tai chi. A short ride away, the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 as Vietnam's first national university, gives a quieter look at the city's scholarly past.

**What to eat.** Hanoi is where pho actually comes from, and it tastes different here: lighter broth, less garnish than the southern version. Bun cha (grilled pork with noodles) and egg coffee are equally essential. The Old Quarter's street kitchens are the place to try both, ideally from a low plastic stool with everyone else.

☑ Beyond the center. A short trip out to Duong Lam Ancient Village shows a side of the region most visitors miss: laterite stone houses, rice paddies, and a pace of life that hasn't changed much in generations. It pairs well with a half-day exploring the city's incense-making villages, a craft still passed down through families.

☑ A few practical notes.** Hanoi has four real seasons, so pack accordingly, spring and autumn (roughly March–April and September–November) bring the most comfortable weather. Crossing the street takes a bit of nerve at first: walk at a steady pace and let the traffic flow around you. And keep small cash on hand for street food and cyclo rides.

☑ Hanoi isn't a city you check off in a day. It's one that rewards wandering, a temple you stumble into, a bowl of pho that resets your whole trip, a rooftop view over the lake at dusk.

☑ Thinking about visiting? We're happy to help you build a Hanoi itinerary that fits how you like to travel.
