Happy World Oceans Day! 🌊🐬✨
To celebrate, we’re thrilled to feature Dr. Jo Marie Acebes, a marine mammal researcher, National Geographic Explorer, a member of the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group, founder and principal investigator of Balyena.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting whales & dolphins in the Philippines. 🇵🇭
Here are some tips from Dr. Acebes!
1. Any Eco-friendly travel tip for coastal areas?
Plan carefully! Always try to consider cost-efficient ways like taking overnight bus or hiring a local fishing boat for island hopping. If traveling for leisure, stay longer to make the most out of your trip.
2. What’s the most inspiring encounter you’ve had with whales or dolphins and where was it?
Too many to choose from! But I recently witnessed a humpback whale mom & calf flipper slapping together in the Babuyan Marine Corridor, Philippines. We were able to watch them from about 100m away and they were unbothered by our presence. We were just in awe!
3. What threats do whales & dolphins face?
27 species grace our waters, with some, like short-finned pilot whales and pygmy blue whales, visible from the shore in the Bohol Sea. Deep waters near islands bring s***m whales, spotted dolphins, and Fraser’s dolphins within 5km. We’re also Southeast Asia’s only humpback whale breeding ground.
Sadly, human actions endanger these wonders. Plastic pollution is a major threat, with animals getting entangled or ingesting harmful debris. Unregulated coastal development disrupts critical habitats, while increasing boat traffic raises the risk of ship strikes.
4. Any message for travelers on protecting the ocean?
Be mindful of your trash! Avoid single-use plastics, bring reusable containers, and pack out what you bring in. Every little bit helps!
