📌 THE DISTINCTIVE BEAUTY OF EMBROIDERY ON THE TRADITIONAL COSTUMES OF THE RED DAO PEOPLE IN SAPA
The patterns and colours on Red Dao clothing are not merely decorative elements; they serve as a symbolic link between people, nature, and the community. Colour plays a central role in defining the uniqueness of the costume. A fundamental characteristic of Red Dao attire is its vibrant palette, with the bright red headscarf being the most distinctive feature.
According to the theory of the Five Elements (Âm Dương Ngũ Hành), white corresponds to metal and black to water, with metal generating water, symbolising favourable growth. Yellow is often placed next to white in embroidery, with yellow representing earth and white representing metal a mutually beneficial pairing that signifies harmony and prosperity. Neutral tones are used alongside warm colours to soften their intensity, or between warm and cool tones to reduce visual contrast.
In Red Dao culture, the sky is revered, and prayers to heaven accompany important rituals. As such, representations of the sun appear frequently in costume embroidery, taking on various forms from bộ ung ton (small sun) to tôm bộ ung (large sun).
