We believe great packaging design should work for everyone.

Accessibility isn’t an afterthought, it’s at the heart of how we engineer packaging solutions for a global market. From easy-open features and ergonomic closures, to intuitive user experiences, inclusive design helps brands create products that are usable, enjoyable, and accessible to more people.

And the need has never been greater. Research shows that weak grip strength and reduced hand function increase significantly with age, with studies finding prevalence rates reaching over 20% in older adults in the UK.

Inclusive packaging design is more than convenience – it’s dignity, independence, and better brand experiences for everyone. Because when packaging is engineered for accessibility, it works better for all users, not just some.

At FORDS, we’re proud to engineer packaging with inclusion in mind, and create solutions that put people first.

🧠 How a product is packaged plays a massive role in consumer psychology.

It influences buying decisions before, during, and after using the product. Colours, shapes and branding all attract attention on the shelf, but the physical opening experience plays a major role in customer satisfaction and repeat purchasing.

Consumers subconsciously judge a brand by how easy and enjoyable its packaging is to open. If a foil seal peels neatly, without leaving a sticky residue, or requiring excessive force, the product feels more accessible and premium. This creates a positive emotional response because the packaging removes frustration and makes the product convenient and reliable.

Ease of opening is especially important for products used repeatedly, like food, beverages, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Convenient packaging reduces friction points for the consumer, and instead builds familiarity, encourage them to repeat purchase again and again because they remember the experience as simple and satisfying.

In this way, functional packaging design directly influences loyalty by turning everyday interactions into positive brand experiences.

🔥 Fire Safety Training Completed 🔥

Recently, our team took part in comprehensive Fire Safety Training, with great engagement from everyone involved. The session covered key topics including:

✅ Common causes of fire
✅ How fire spreads
✅ Types and uses of fire extinguishers
✅ Fire extinguisher checks and inspections
✅ Compartmentation and its role in fire safety
✅ Practical demonstrations
✅ Hands-on fire extinguishing exercises

It was fantastic to see everyone actively participating, asking questions, and getting involved in the practical elements of the training. Building knowledge and confidence in fire safety is essential, and today’s session was a great reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

A big thank you to everyone who took part and contributed to a successful training day. 👏

🚨 83% of visually impaired consumers struggle to read food labels. Finding it either difficult, or impossible to access.

- 73% feel little thought is given to designing packaging for people with sight loss
- Only 22% believe accessibility is considered in packaging design
- 37% have experienced allergic reactions due to unreadable labels
- 41% have brought products that don’t meet their dietary needs

Inconvenience aside, it’s a serious safety and independence issue. Brands have a duty to ensure their packaging is accessible to all, not just the few.

There’s some design choices that can be done to make things easier. Bold, clear text on a plain background, for example. Or, if you really want to go the extra mile for your consumers, smart, accessible packaging.

Technologies like QR codes and smart labels can unlock audio product information, while tactile features like braille and embossing make packs identifiable through touch. Creating a more inclusive experience for everyone.

At FORDS, we can help you take action by:

✅ Centralising QR codes on your foil closures for instant access to product information, without taking up limited real estate on the container

✅ Adding embossed braille so key details are easy to find.

Because packaging should always be accessible.

Tethered caps were introduced in the EU in 2023 in an effort to reduce plastic litter.

3 years on, and the mandate is going strong, but do we know if it’s worked?

Packaging convenience is more than a ‘nice-to-have’.

The data is clear, when packaging is difficult to open, consumers notice - and sometimes they’ll choose to switch products entirely. For older adults in particular, how easy something is to open can be the difference between a seamless experience and real frustration.

Did you know?

- Two thirds of consumers rate convenience features either ‘important’ or ‘very important’.
- 34% of elderly consumers have bought a different product when they couldn’t manage the packaging.
- In usability testing, some packs proved surprisingly difficult to open, even for common food and drink items.

The takeaway?

Easy-to-open packaging is about more than just comfort - it’s also accessibility, brand loyalty, and making sure the product can actually be used as intended.

Never underestimate the power of a perfect peel.

A well designed foil closure should strike the right balance between secure, easy-to-open for all users (including those with limited mobility), and cleanly removable in one piece without the frustration or mess.

It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in how customers experience your product - and whether they come back.

Across food and beverage, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and more, the right peel solution can elevate your packaging and your brand, to an experience your consumers will love.

At FORDS, we don’t leave performance to chance, especially when introducing alternative foils.

This is a demonstration of our Coefficient of Friction test, where we analyse both the top coating and seal coating sides of the foil to understand their surface behaviour. By doing this, and comparing the results with proposed alternatives, we generate real performance data, not assumptions, to predict how each material will behave in production.

Because in high-speed cap manufacturing, control over friction isn’t a detail, it’s the difference between smooth flow and costly downtime.
