Chicory was first introduced into South Africa for commercial use in 1895 in the Alexandria area in the Eastern Cape. The bulk of South Africa's chicory is still grown here. It is also grown in the Southwell and Bathurst areas and, under irrigation, in the Gamtoos and Sundays River Valley.

What is chicory tea good for?

Chicory is used for loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, liver and gallbladder disorders, cancer, and rapid heartbeat. It is also used as a “tonic,” to increase urine production, to protect the liver, and to balance the stimulant effect of coffee.

Can you make tea out of chicory?

Boil your water. Place the dried chicory root pieces into an empty tea bag or into an infuser. Place the tea bag or infuser into a cup and pour the boiling water over that. Steep for about 5 minutes, then remove the tea bag or infuser.

What an experience it was to tour the production plant of CHICORéE LEROUX - where they transform the chicory plant using their unique expertise. Thanks to their 150 planters from the beautiful Hauts-de-France region, the plant is grown locally.

The Leroux company is originally from the North of France, more precisely from Orchies. Since 1858, chicory Leroux has been manufacturing its products locally. From harvest to processed product, Chicorée Lerouz is a local and family business, and has been operational for generations.

"For more than 160 years, Leroux has prioritized the quality of its products. Acting with respect for the environment, the Leroux company, certified and awarded several times, expanded to share the benefits of chicory to a wider audience.

In 1998, Leroux was the first European agri-food company to invest in a natural treatment system for its process water by ferti-irrigation or plant biofilter, on a willow plantation. The combination of soil microorganisms and the nutritional needs of trees purifies its process water.
