Travel Advisory | South Africa Introduces Mandatory Digital Traveller Declarations

From 1 July 2026, South Africa has officially implemented the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS), making digital traveller declarations mandatory for all international arrivals and departures across airports, land border posts, seaports and rail entry points.

The new system replaces the traditional paper-based customs declaration forms and allows travellers to complete their customs declaration online before travelling. Where applicable, duties and VAT may also be declared and paid electronically prior to arrival.

The introduction of SATMS is designed to streamline border processing, improve efficiency and enhance the overall travel experience while strengthening customs compliance.
