This is more than a channel. It’s a story of freedom, family, gratitude, and the soul of the African wilderness. If the bush calls you home — you belong here.

🧭 Our Story (Founder’s Voice)

I’m Corné — an overlander at heart. I choose gravel over airports, sunsets over city lights, and the quiet of the African bush over anything else. Every mile reminds me why I explore: to feel alive, to connect deeper with nature, and to capture stories worth remembering. Tusk & Tyre is my way of sharing that journey with you.

On the road again. Left Joburg, heading down to Cape Town, then up to Vilanculos, then back to Joburg. Two days after I get back, I'm off to Tanzania.
Also, thanks for the engagement this past month. We're closing in on 8000 followers now. Appreciate every one of you.

How around 130 desert elephants survive northwest Namibia

Seventy kilometres of open gravel. No water, no shade. Namibia's desert elephants cross it at night, and only about 130 of them are left.
They start in the Hoarusib, up near Purros. They drink, they feed, they wait. Then they walk south to the Hoanib in one push after dark, when the heat drops. What pulls them there is the ana tree. When the pods fall they're protein-rich, and the elephants spend weeks working them off the riverbed.
These aren't a separate species. Same elephants as the ones down in Etosha, no genetic difference. They just live differently. A leaner build, so the legs look longer, and broad feet that handle the soft sand over the distances they walk. Family groups of two or three, which means less competition for the little food and water there is.
There are records from the 1970s of them walking the whole way from the Kunene down to the Hoarusib, close to 190km. They don't go that far now. They've worked out the desert. The other problem is us.
If you've spent time up in Kaokoland, tell me what you saw.

Overlanding the Deadly Dry Rivers of Puros, Namibia

Deep in Kaokoland, Namibia, the Hoarusib River looks like nothing but a highway of dry sand. But when the flash floods hit, everything changes instantly.
We traveled through Puros a remote 3,500 square kilometer community conservancy where desert-adapted elephants, lions, and leopards navigate the tight rock walls of the Hoarusib gorge. This is a place where wildlife and community survival are completely intertwined, and where the river dictates exactly when you move and when you wait.

Deep in the remote corners of Namibia, two massive valleys run completely parallel to each other, yet they couldn't be more different. On one side, the Marienfluss defies the arid climate with soft grasslands and hidden water channels. On the other, Hartmann’s Valley is a brutal, wind-scoured expanse of sand pushed up by the Atlantic over thousands of years.

This is proper, unforgiving off-road country. No fuel, no signal, and absolutely no room for error. What I pack in Motsumi is exactly what stands between me and the elements. From the haunting sea mist rolling off the ocean to the completely unexplained phenomenon of the desert fairy circles, we explore what makes this isolated wilderness one of the most mysterious places on earth.

The Himba people of Kaokoland are often romanticized as a culture frozen in time, hidden away in the harsh deserts of northwestern Namibia. But they aren't hidden ,and they were never lost.

In this episode, we park Motsumi and journey into a traditional Himba homestead near the Kunene River. Beyond the striking red ochre and the intricate, symbolic hairstyles lies a history of immense resilience. From surviving devastating cattle plagues that earned them the name "Ovahimba" (beggars), to enduring colonial wars through sheer geography, this is a look at a culture that nearly ended twice in the same century, and didn't.

Sometimes, the best thing a place can do is make you quieter than when you arrived.
