October half term can be a funny one for family travel.

Europe is beginning to feel distinctly autumnal, some long-haul destinations are heading into their wetter seasons, and the obvious family favourites can feel… well, a little obvious.

But there are some brilliant places where October is actually a fantastic time to travel.

And these are the destinations we’d be looking at if you told us you wanted to use half term for a proper family adventure — not simply find somewhere warm.

Think:

🌴 Exploring Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, where rainforest meets the sea
🐘 Following wildlife across the Kenyan savannah
🌊 Discovering the adventurous side of Mauritius beyond its beaches
❄️ Chasing waterfalls, glaciers and geothermal landscapes in Iceland
🏺 Stepping into thousands of years of history in Egypt

The difference?

We’re not just asking “where is warm in October?”

We’re asking:

What can your family actually experience here?
What will your children remember?
And where can we take you beyond the usual tourist trail?

So if you’re still wondering what to do with October half term, here are five places we’d have on our list...

And yes, some of them are warm.

But one of them definitely isn’t. 😉

Because sometimes the best family adventure is the one you didn’t initially think of.

Which of the above would your family choose?

We’ve been busy getting to know the latest destination to join our portfolio.

We make a point of personally visiting the countries with our own family to truly understand the locations and we only work with the local agencies that share our values.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a fantastic choice if you want dramatic scenery, fascinating history, excellent food, and relatively few crowds.

The landscapes are gorgeous. Mountains, rivers, waterfalls and deep valleys dominate the landscape and offer loads of family fun- fuelled activities.

Within easy reach of Croatia and Montenegro, it’s also a perfect combination trip with neighbouring countries and some perfect family beach down time to end your Balkan adventure.

Let us know if you have considered it as a destination.

A slightly more personal message than my usual travel content.

Having lost my mum to Motor Neurone Disease 35 years ago I am proud to be running the 2027 London Marathon (in my 45th year) to mark this milestone and raise funds for research and to help those living with this cruel disease.

I would be very grateful for any support you can give, you can read more about my story and donate here.

After losing my mum to Motor Neurone Disease 35 years ago next year I am so proud to have secured a place running the 2027 London Marathon for the MND Association to help them raise vital funds for research and those living with the disease.

You can read more about my story in the link in our bio and if you would like to help kick start my fundraising I would be extremely grateful.

Sri Lanka is back on the BA route map… and we couldn’t be happier! 🇱🇰

There are few destinations we recommend more often to adventurous families than Sri Lanka. It’s one of those rare places where you can spot elephants on safari, climb ancient rock fortresses, ride one of the world’s most scenic train journeys, learn to surf, wander through tea plantations and relax on beautiful beaches – all in one holiday.

Even better, British Airways is resuming direct flights from London Gatwick to Colombo from 23 October, making this incredible destination even easier to reach for UK families. The service will operate three times a week during the winter season.

If you’re already thinking ahead, now is the perfect time to start planning for:

🎄 Christmas & New Year
☀️ February Half Term
🐣 Easter Holidays

If Sri Lanka has been on your family’s wish list, we’d love to help you create an adventure that’s completely tailored to you.

We’ve been lucky enough to visit Egypt more times than we can count (it’s definitely into double figures now!) and it’s one destination we never get tired of recommending to families. 🇪🇬

For so many children, Egypt needs no introduction. They’ve already learned about the pyramids, mummies and pharaohs at school, so seeing them in real life is like stepping into the pages of a history book.

Our favourite itinerary? Spend a few days soaking up the incredible sights of Cairo and Luxor, then swap ancient temples for the Mediterranean coast.

September and October are great months to visit. The hottest part of summer has passed, the sea is still wonderfully warm, there are fewer crowds, and you’ll often find some of the best value too.

Marassi is a side of Egypt many people don’t know about, turquoise water, white sand and a laid-back atmosphere that’s earned it the nickname of Egypt’s answer to the Maldives.

If you’re looking for a family holiday that combines unforgettable experiences with some well-earned beach time, Egypt really does tick all the boxes. ✨
