⏱️ Transport cost is not created only while the truck is moving. Waiting time matters too.
A vehicle can arrive on schedule and still lose hours in a queue, at a loading point, waiting for paperwork or during an unplanned receiving delay. Across repeated loads, that “small” waiting time becomes a major utilisation problem.
Turnaround time is the total period from arrival at a site to departure after loading or offloading. Improving it usually requires both the carrier and the site to understand where time is being lost.
Common causes include:
✓ Congested gate or weighbridge processes ✓ Loading equipment not ready
✓ Missing or incorrect documentation ✓ Unclear booking slots
✓ Product or quantity verification delays
✓ Slow offloading or receiving processes
✓ Poor communication when conditions change
The goal is not to rush safe procedures. The goal is to remove avoidable waiting around them.
Better turnaround improves fleet utilisation, delivery predictability and the capacity available to the client. Measure the minutes between gate-in and gate-out. They tell a bigger story than most people realise.
