Come on your own. Come with your partner. Come with a friend.

Our South Africa Essentials Minigroup for Gay Men is designed for a maximum of just eight guests, which means the group stays personal, relaxed and easy to get to know.
There is time to share the journey, enjoy meals and experiences together, and get to know the people you are travelling with — but also enough free time to do your own thing.

And there will be plenty to talk about along the way.

Cape Town through a local LGBTQ+ lens. W**e tasting in the W**elands. Two nights with François and JD at their private mountain sanctuary in the Little Karoo. And three nights on Big 5 safari in a private Kruger reserve. 🦁🍷⛰️

Travelling solo? You are very welcome, and there is a reasonable single supplement.
Travelling as a couple or with a friend? Equally welcome.

Some of the best South African travel advice comes on cardboard. 🇿🇦

“Stop & eat or we’ll both starve to death.”

"Beware of hippos at night."

And then there are the road signs reminding you that, yes, an elephant crossing is an entirely reasonable possibility.

Welcome to travelling South Africa.

Between the big-ticket sights are the details that make a road trip feel unmistakably South African: hand-painted signs, padstals that appear just when you need coffee, windmills beside empty roads, place names you confidently mispronounce for the first three days, and a national sense of humour that tends to get straight to the point.

Then there’s the road food. Roosterkoek. Koesisters. Braaibroodjies. Shisanyama. Biltong bought because you stopped for petrol and apparently that is how these things happen.

None of it is likely to be the reason you booked the trip.

But somehow, these are often the bits you remember.

The grand landscapes tell you where you are.

The small stuff tells you you’re in South Africa.

Give me Kruger. But make it moody. 🌫️🐘

This guest video is a good reminder that safari does not need blue skies to deliver.
Mist hanging over the bush. Elephants moving through the landscape. African wild dogs, baboons and zebra appearing along the way. And, as always, that sense that something else could emerge around the next bend.

That unpredictability is part of the point.

If you are thinking about when to go, Kruger is a year-round destination — but each season gives you something different.

Winter brings drier conditions, thinner vegetation and easier wildlife viewing around water sources. Autumn and spring are our personal favourites for milder temperatures and generally dry days. Summer brings heat, rain, greener landscapes, newborn animals and excellent birding.

So the real question is not “when is the best time to go?”

It is “what kind of Kruger do you want to experience?”

🇫🇷 La Route des Vins ne se résume pas à une succession de dégustations.

Notre Excursion Route des Vins est conçue pour vous faire découvrir ce qui donne à cette région son caractère : ses domaines historiques, ses paysages, ses villages et, bien sûr, les vins qui y sont produits.

La journée commence à Babylonstoren avec une visite de cave et une dégustation de vins, suivie de temps libre pour découvrir ses jardins.

Nous poursuivons ensuite vers Franschhoek pour un déjeuner léger et un moment dans le village, dont l’histoire reste étroitement liée à l’arrivée des Huguenots français au Cap.

Dernière étape : Tokara, où une dégustation d’huile d’olive précède une dégustation de vins guidée.

Trois étapes très différentes, réunies dans une journée qui permet de découvrir les W**elands au-delà du simple verre de vin.

September is when Namaqualand starts showing off.

For most of the year, this corner of the Northern Cape is a dry, sun-scorched, semi-arid landscape.

Then winter rains arrive, and everything changes.

Across August and September, wildflowers can transform the landscape into a sweep of orange, purple, white and yellow. Zebras, springbok and gemsbok grazing among the blooms only add to the magic.

Spring is the time to come for the flowers, with mild days around 25°C making it ideal for exploring the region. Prefer hiking and outdoor adventures without the flowers? April and May bring similarly pleasant temperatures and a completely different side of Namaqualand and the Cederberg.

Whichever you choose, there’s a season for it.

🇫🇷 Pour comprendre Le Cap, il faut regarder au-delà de la carte postale.

Notre Excursion l’Essentiel du Cap relie quelques-uns des lieux les plus connus de la ville à l’histoire, aux communautés et aux événements qui ont façonné la Mother City.
La journée commence par la Montagne de la Table, avec une montée en téléphérique jusqu’au sommet pour prendre toute la mesure de la ville, de son littoral et des montagnes qui l’entourent.

De là, nous redescendons dans la ville pour découvrir Bo-Kaap, son histoire et son héritage cap malais, avant de poursuivre à pied et en minibus à travers le centre-ville.
Greenmarket Square, la cathédrale St George, les Maisons du Parlement, Company’s Garden, District Six — chaque étape ajoute une nouvelle pièce à l’histoire du Cap, de son passé colonial et de l’apartheid à la ville que l’on découvre aujourd’hui.

Nous terminons au V&A Waterfront, où vous pourrez prolonger la journée à votre rythme — promenade, shopping, dîner au bord du port ou croisière au coucher du soleil en option.

South Africa is calling — and travellers are answering. 🇿🇦

According to the latest Stats SA figures, international arrivals are now at 94.7% of 2019 levels, with 1.37 million overseas arrivals recorded between January and July 2026.

After a few disrupted years, that feels significant: South Africa is not simply recovering. It is drawing people back in serious numbers.

And we can understand why.

South Africa is one of those countries that rarely gives you just one reason to come. You might arrive for safari and leave talking about the food. Come for Cape Town and fall in love with the Karoo. Plan one big journey and end up mentally planning the next before you have even flown home.

Some of the people and experiences we are proudest to introduce travellers to are not found in a guidebook.

Isibane se Afrika is a community choir from Khayelitsha that brings together music, dance and storytelling, and it is one of the initiatives The Travel Café is proud to support.

What makes the choir important to us goes beyond the performance itself.

Through its work, Isibane se Afrika creates opportunities for young people through the arts. When the choir is booked for a dinner, celebration, event or travel experience, that support goes back into the organisation and the people behind it.

For us, this is what meaningful cultural connection should look like: not culture presented as entertainment from a distance, but an opportunity to meet people, hear their stories and support work rooted in the community itself.

We have seen how much energy and presence Isibane se Afrika can bring to a room, but more importantly, we value what sits behind that performance.
