See ans Be Seen aims to proactively reduce road accidents in South Africa by promoting the use of safety reflectors and teach the underprivileged about traffic safety. Statistics:
• Around 14 000 people die on South African roads every year,
• approximately 5000 (40%) of these deaths are pedestrians (incl. runners and cyclists).
• 3500 (65-70%) of all fatal pedestrian accidents occur between D
usk and Dawn, the period of reduced visibility.
• Road death is the leading cause of death among people between the ages of 15 and 29. What differences can a Safety Reflector Make?
• The risk of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian increases by 1100% between dusk and dawn due to the reduced visibility.
• A safety reflector increases the visibility of a pedestrian to a driver by anywhere between 300 and 1,000% (depending on distance, darkness, weather, and the placement of the safety reflector).
• An estimated 3 000 pedestrian fatalities can be avoided in South Africa every year through the use of safety reflectors.
• The increased use of safety reflectors makes the road safer not only for the pedestrian but for the driver who may be charged with culpable homicide should they kill a pedestrian.
• A safety reflector will give many children in South Africa the prospect of growing up with parents, as many of the pedestrian fatalities involve young parents. All citizens need to use South African roads in order to participate in economic, social and private activity. People from all demographic and socio-economic groups, the wealthy and poor, the employed and unemployed, are all in need of the road for transport and access. In a developing country such as South Africa, a significant proportion of road users will neither have the financial means to buy a motor-vehicle, nor the ability to get a drivers license, yet they are as dependent on the roads as any car owner. See and Be Seen aims to provide the highest standard of safety for all road users and to educate the citizens about road safety.
