Spring just arrived in the African bush. 🌍🌸

While half the world is pulling jackets out for autumn, we're watching new grass push through soil, migratory birds touching down, and we get ever closer to viewing the first wobbly-legged calves start finding their feet.

This is the start of an iconic African safari season - golden morning light, thinning bush for easier wildlife viewing, flowers start to bloom and you find that unmistakable feeling of everything waking up.

Did you know there's a name for travelling after dark? 🌙

It's called "noctourism" - travel experiences centred around what happens once the sun goes down.

And if you've ever been on safari, you'll know why nighttime deserves some attention of its own.
As the temperature drops, the bush changes. Animals that have spent much of the day resting become more active, while nocturnal species begin to emerge.

A night drive can mean spotting everything from prowling leopards and lions to hyenas, owls, genets, bushbabies and some of the smaller creatures that are very easy to miss during the day.

But noctourism isn't only about wildlife.

Being far away from city lights also gives you the chance to experience properly dark skies. Stargazing, listening to the bush around the campfire or simply stopping the vehicle, switching off the lights and sitting quietly for a few minutes can be just as memorable as a sighting.

The funny thing is, noctourism might be a newer travel term, but experiencing Africa after dark certainly isn't.

Night drives and evenings under the stars have been part of safari for a very very long time. We're just glad more travellers are starting to appreciate how much there is to experience after sunset.
So next time you're planning an African safari, don't only think about what you want to see during the day.

When someone who's travelled to 107 countries puts their East African safari at number one… that means a lot. 🌍

Ian recently travelled through East Africa with Safari365, and this message landed in our inbox on his final day in Nairobi.
