This stunning moonrise arrives on the eve of a Blue Moon, a rare event that occurs when two full moons fall within the same calendar month. May 2026 began with a full moon on 1 May and ends with another on 31 May, making this month's second full moon a Blue Moon.
Despite its name, a Blue Moon doesn't usually appear blue. Its significance lies in its rarity, which is why the phrase "once in a blue moon" has come to mean something uncommon and special.
