We recently had guests travel to Tswalu, in South Africa’s remote Northern Cape, which sits on the southern edge of the Kalahari. It is the largest private reserve in South Africa, covering 1,200 square kilometres, with August and September being a prime time to visit.

Tswalu offers such diverse sightings, from big predators to some of Africa’s most elusive species, rare pangolin and aardvark, brown hyena, aardwolf and bat-eared fox.

In July, Richard was invited by Singita on a special reconnaissance trip to see their new concession in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. They purpose built a tented camp on a palm-filled island to host a small group of Singita partners.

We visited the nearly completed Elela (opening in December) which, to my mind, will be the finest lodge in Africa.

I’m planning a trip back there in 2027, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be doing the same!

Did you know, Elephants are among the most cognitively advanced animals on Earth?

They solve problems and communicate over long distances using low frequency sounds that travel for kilometres.

Their memories are exceptional with older matriarchs remembering the locations of water, food, and safe routes across landscapes they have travelled for decades, helping their families survive during droughts and other challenges. Elephants also form strong social bonds, they appear to comfort distressed companions as well as work together to care for calves.

And perhaps most remarkable of all, elephants remind us that intelligence, memory and compassion exist far beyond our own species.

Some of Africa's largest salt pans are so vast and so bright that they can be seen from space!

Places like the Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana are the remnants of an ancient "mega-lake" that covered thousands of square kilometres thousands of years ago. As the climate became drier, the lake gradually disappeared, leaving behind enormous, flat salt-rich plains.

Over time, water evaporated but the minerals remained. The white crust of salt and other minerals reflects sunlight exceptionally well, making the pans stand out against the darker surrounding landscape.

For much of the year, these landscapes appear almost lifeless. But after seasonal rains, shallow water transforms parts of the pans into temporary wetlands, attracting flamingos, zebras, wildebeest, and a host of other wildlife.

What looks like an empty white expanse from space is actually the legacy of an ancient lake and one of Africa's most dramatic seasonal ecosystems.
