HOW TO SPOT A TRAINED FURNITURE REMOVALS CREW

Moving furniture is not just about strength — it’s about using your brain, good technique and working as a team. 💪🧠

📦 1. EMPTY ALL DRAWERS

When carrying a cupboard, chest of drawers, desk, filing cabinet or storage unit with drawers, empty the drawers first.

Removing the weight makes the furniture easier and safer to handle.

🔒 2. SECURE THE DRAWERS

Once the drawers are emptied, use shrink wrap to keep them securely in place.

If furniture is picked up at the wrong angle or tilted while loading or offloading, unsecured drawers can slide or fall out and damage the furniture.

📚 3. IF YOU ARE STACKING FURNITURE

When stacking furniture inside a truck, never simply place one piece directly against another.

Use cardboard, moving blankets or bubble wrap between items to create protection.

This helps prevent:
❌ Scratches
❌ Dents
❌ Scuff marks
❌ Paint damage
❌ Furniture rubbing against each other during transport

🧱 4. BULKY DOESN’T MEAN HEAVY

🚨 CLIENT SAID WHAT? — THIS ONE COST US. 😢

I got a call from a so-called transporter — let’s call him A.

He called me a few times, asked for quotes, and promised me work in the future.

A week later, A sends me another number:

“Please help this client. I’m busy and can’t make it. He will call you.”

So B calls me.

“I'm a transporter. I've got an issue. Can you assist?”

Sure. We discuss the job.

He needs a lounge suite collected from a company in JHB and taken to a truck nearby. He says he's busy loading another load and doesn't want to lose this one.

We agree on a price. R1500

Now here's where I made my mistake.

Our standard policy is:

💰 DEPOSIT UPFRONT.
🚛 THEN THE VEHICLE DISPATCHES.

He knows transport. He understands how the industry works.

His excuse?

“This is the first time I'm working with you. Once you've loaded, I'll make payment. After this load, we can work on upfront payments.”

I agreed.

🚨 RULE #1 BROKEN.

I call one of my vetted network transporters closest to the pickup.

Instructions:

✅ Collect the lounge suite
✅ Send loading pictures
✅ Once loaded — PAYMENT MUST BE MADE
✅ Drivers Licence/ pic of number plate

The transporter arrives.

The suite is loaded.

📸 Pictures sent.

“Hello, payment please.”

Then…

📵 PHONE OFF.

We assume maybe he'll arrange payment through his driver or secondary number.

The vehicle travels to the agreed drop-off.

And guess what?

🚛 THERE'S NO TRUCK.

We wait.

30 minutes.

45 minutes.

⏰ ONE HOUR.

Still no truck.

Still no payment.

Still no client.

So we call the company where we collected the furniture.

We explain the situation and ask:

“Do you have another number for this transporter?”

They have both numbers — A AND B.

That's when the story starts making sense.

🚨 A AND B ARE THE SAME PERSON.

The so-called transporter had apparently collected the money from the furniture seller and disappeared.

Then we hear something even more interesting…

The shop owner tells us:

The lounge suite was supposed to go from JHB to Newcastle for R2,500.

The scammer told us he would pay us R1,500 to move it.

Now we've got a vehicle sitting with somebody else's furniture, no truck to deliver to, and a client whose phone is switched off.

So we explain everything to the shop owner.

We tell her:

“We need to recover the costs of coming out here. We can't simply take your furniture home.”

She agrees to assist with the costs.

We return.

We offload the lounge suite.

And then…

💥 SHE CHANGES HER MIND.

“I can't pay you. I never hired you.”

😳

Seriously?

You were just about to lose the entire lounge suite.

We had a vehicle dispatched.

We paid the transporter.

We collected your furniture.

We travelled with it.

We waited for over an hour.

We found out your transporter had disappeared.

We helped prevent the furniture from potentially disappearing with him.

And now…

NOT A CENT.

You were potentially saved from losing R17000 worth of furniture, while our actual transport costs were left sitting on our shoulders.

And that's the lesson.

🚨 ONCE YOU BREAK YOUR OWN RULES, IT CAN BACKFIRE.

I created the rule for a reason:

NO DEPOSIT.
NO DISPATCH.

It doesn't matter if you're dealing with another transporter.

It doesn't matter if they promise future work.

It doesn't matter how convincing they sound.

It doesn't matter how many times they've called you.

RULES ARE RULES.

Because when something goes wrong, the person who broke the rule is the person left paying for the consequences.

This one cost us a call-out and running costs.

But the lesson?

PRICELESS.

From now on:

💰 Payment/deposit cleared.
📸 Load confirmed.
🚛 THEN WE DISPATCH.

No exceptions.

Because in transport…

TRUST IS GOOD.
PAYMENT IS BETTER. 😢🚛
