The Day the Earth Revealed Its Greatest Treasure 💎

On 25 January 1905, an ordinary workday at the Cullinan Mine turned into one of the greatest moments in history.

As the sun shone over the mine, the black mine worker noticed something unusual glinting from the wall of the open pit. He pointed it out to the Mine Superintendent Frederick Wells. Curious, Frederick Wells climbed down with nothing more than a pocket knife. What he carefully pried from the rock wasn't just another diamond—it was the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered.
It weighed an astonishing 3,106 carats (621 grams), about the size of a human fist.

The incredible discovery was named the Cullinan Diamond, after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the founder of the mine. Years later, the giant crystal was cut into nine major diamonds and 96 smaller stones. The two largest pieces became part of the British Crown Jewels, where they remain today.
But the story began right here in Cullinan, South Africa—a small mining town that captured the world's attention forever.
