For Youth Day – 16 June
Today we remember the courage of the youth of 1976.
Young people who walked out of classrooms in Soweto and across South Africa, not because they didn’t want to learn, but because they refused to accept a system that told them their language, their voice, and their future didn’t matter. They faced bullets with books. They chose dignity over silence. Many never made it home.
Their sacrifice cracked open the door to freedom. The rights we have today – to speak, to learn, to dream, to vote – were paid for by teenagers who believed change was possible.
To The Youth of Today:
Youth Day isn’t just about looking back. It’s about asking what you’re willing to stand for now. The 1976 generation challenged injustice with courage and unity. Your challenge is different, but the spirit is the same: to build a South Africa that works for everyone.
Let’s honour them by showing up – in our communities, in our ideas, in how we treat each other. The struggle continues in new forms, and the pen, the voice, and the vote are still powerful weapons.
