Truck hijacking risk is not random.

New research presented at the Southern African Transport Conference has identified Delmas, Orange Farm, Kempton Park and Alberton as South Africa’s leading truck hijacking precincts.

Delmas recorded 53 truck hijackings in 2023 followed by Orange Farm with 48, Kempton Park with 47 and Alberton with 42.

The research also found that criminals adapt their methods to specific road environments and make use of off ramps, interchanges, surrounding land and escape routes.

For cargo owners this means route planning cannot only focus on distance, tolls and delivery time. It must also consider driver safety, cargo exposure, known risk areas, communication and response procedures.

“We will reroute if there is a problem” is not a logistics plan.

Planned protests on 30 June may disrupt key freight routes in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng, including routes linked to Durban port, City Deep, Germiston and Beitbridge.

For importers and exporters the risk is practical. Road blockages, route deviations and delayed truck movements can lead to missed delivery windows, storage costs and disruption to production or distribution schedules.
