Johannesburg Mayor steps into e-hailing safety debate

“We will become the eyes and ears of the police and our communities. We will not turn a blind eye. We will go into dark spaces and make them safe for our women to walk, run, live and play,” Morero said.

Mayor Dada Moreo spoke three days ago on improving safety for women using public transport.

He explained a partnership with e-hailing was required due to the level of crime surrounding the area, with the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) advising the industry was working with the city to ensure women’s safety become standard practice. Such measures being taken are creating safer taxi ranks with adequate lighting.

SANTACO explains staff training has included customer care and public relations for drivers and queue marshalls. Moreno continues the work must be done in the e-hailing sector for it’s part in safer public transport due to rising fears over recent attacks on women in Johannesburg.
