Today, Transnet Group Chief Executive, Michelle Phillips joined industry leaders at the Agbiz Congress in Gqeberha, where she delivered a keynote address on the progress being made to improve efficiencies across South Africa's rail and port logistics network.
The engagement comes at a significant moment in Transnet's recovery and reinvention journey. Through focused interventions, operational improvements and strengthened collaboration with customers and stakeholders, the organisation is making measurable progress in restoring the performance and reliability of the freight logistics system.
Recent successes in the agricultural sector demonstrate the impact of these efforts. During the 2025 citrus season, Transnet achieved a 19% year on year increase in re**er container exports, supported by strong operational ex*****on, adaptive logistics planning and close collaboration with growers, exporters and logistics partners. This growth highlights the positive momentum being realised across the logistics value chain.
While these achievements are encouraging, Transnet remains realistic about the shortcomings that still require attention. Addressing these challenges, which include adverse weather conditions and remaining infrastructure limitations, remains a key focus area as Transnet accelerates its recovery initiatives.
The Group CE highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum, strengthening partnerships and driving sustainable improvements that support economic growth, enhance export competitiveness and unlock opportunities for key sectors such as agriculture.
The Agbiz Congress provides an important platform to engage with industry stakeholders on the future of South Africa's logistics network, enable collaboration and to showcase the progress being made in building a more efficient, resilient and globally competitive freight logistics system.
