🚨 ROADWORTHY OR NOT? 🚨

This driver's horn works... but instead of using the steering wheel, it's been wired to a household light switch.

▪︎So... would it PASS or FAIL a South African roadworthy test? 🤔

📖 What do the regulations actually require?

South Africa's National Road Traffic Regulations require every motor vehicle to have an efficient warning device that:

✅ Is in good working order.
✅ Emits a clear, audible sound.
✅ Can be heard from at least 90 metres under normal conditions.

Interestingly, the regulations do not specifically state that the horn must be operated from the steering wheel.

▪︎So what's the problem?

While the law requires an efficient warning device, roadworthy inspectors also assess whether vehicle equipment has been properly installed and is safe to operate.

This is where interpretation can come into play.

👨‍🔧 Inspector A may say:
"The horn works, it's loud enough, and meets the basic requirement. PASS."

👨‍🔧 Inspector B may say:
"The horn has been modified from its original design, requires the driver to remove a hand from the steering wheel, and is no longer conveniently operated. FAIL."

Neither inspector is inventing the law—they're simply applying it from different perspectives.

⚠️ That's why modifications like this can become a grey area during a roadworthy inspection.
