🗓️CHINA'S HOLIDAY PERIOD IS APPROACHING

🚢 ARCTIC SHIPPING MOVES CLOSER TO THE MAINSTREAM

One of the most notable developments this month is the launch of a scheduled China–Europe container service through the Arctic's Northern Sea Route. The new route is designed to significantly shorten the journey between Asia and Europe and provides an alternative to traditional maritime corridors. Russia has also reported strong growth in Arctic oil shipments to Asia this year.

While the route remains seasonal and faces considerable environmental, navigational and geopolitical challenges, its development signals that the geography of global trade could be changing.

🚗 CHINA'S EXPORT BOOM IS PUTTING PRESSURE ON VEHICLE LOGISTICS

China's automotive exports are accelerating rapidly. July exports reached approximately 923,000 vehicles, up 88% year-on-year, as manufacturers increasingly target markets across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

The surge is creating a new logistical challenge: there are not enough specialised car carriers to accommodate the growth. Industry reports indicate that vehicle-carrier freight rates have risen sharply, with some manufacturers turning to conventional container shipping as an alternative.

South Africa is experiencing a significant winter weather system this week, with heavy snowfall, damaging winds, severe thunderstorms and disruptive rainfall affecting several parts of the country. The conditions are already creating challenges for road transport and regional supply chains.

The Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are among the areas experiencing disruptive snowfall, while severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of Gauteng, the Free State, North West and the eastern interior. Coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal are also facing strong winds and rough seas.

For the logistics sector, severe weather can have immediate operational consequences:
