THREADS OF INDIA | Stories in Cloth

Yesterday, our journey took us to Ajrakhpur, Gujarat, where colour, craftsmanship and tradition come together in the beautiful art of Ajrakh block printing.

A day of getting our hands involved, discovering the patience and precision behind this ancient craft, and gaining a deeper appreciation for the artisans who keep these traditions alive.

Wooden blocks, natural dyes, intricate patterns and generations of knowledge — each piece of cloth carries a story.

And then, something rather special. Lunch in the home of one of the printers, where generous hospitality added another lovely layer to our experience.

These are the moments I treasure most about travelling in India. Not simply observing a culture, but being welcomed into its everyday life.

Beautiful cloth. Beautiful people. Beautiful connections.

C u r i o u s J o u r n e y s Threads Of India Tour travelers spent a fun filled day in Mumbai with the highly entertaining Deepa Krishnan at The Magic Room Mumbai.

The ladies listened in awe about artisan textile development in India. We had a delicious lunch, lots of chats, much laughter, shopped till we dropped and ended off being entertained by Deepa in her home.

That’s how how Curious Journeys rolls.

India, one sketch at a time. 🇮🇳

One of the pleasures of this Painting Tour has been simply stopping.

A postbox in Hauz Khas.
An arch at Humayun’s Tomb.
The old domes of Delhi.
Weathered walls and an ancient well in Holipura.
Women in brilliant colour at a stepwell.
The faded beauty of places that have stood quietly for generations.

None of these sketches is meant to be perfect. They are little records of a moment — the light, the colour, the wonky lines, the things I noticed because I stayed long enough to see them.

And perhaps that has been one of the loveliest parts of our Curious Journeys Painting Tour of India: permission to slow down, sit still, look properly… and allow India to find its way onto the page.

My sketchbook is becoming a journey in itself.
