Die Stal, one of the Philippolis Groenhuise, was used as a stable before being carefully restored in the early 2000s by Jens Friis Sr.
Today, guests whose vehicles are often worth far more than the property itself stay here while travelling from the north to the south of South Africa (or vice versa).
In the foreground is an oat field, with a patch of maize to the left. The karee trees in the background have grown substantially since this photo was taken, and additional cypress trees have been planted to ensure this distinctive “Italian” avenue of trees will continue to thrive for generations to come.

It’s well worth taking a break from the N1 at Bytenkant Restaurant in Trompsburg. The food is delicious, the prices are reasonable, the staff are friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. In summer, you can also enjoy your meal on the patio, making it an even more pleasant stop on your journey.
