There’s something magical about Addo Elephant National Park, no matter the weather.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful Colombian family of 19, now living in the United States, on a full-day safari after collecting them from The Boardwalk Hotel in Gqeberha.

Although the winter chill was definitely in the air, Addo had other plans. Following lunch, we made the experience even more memorable by swapping their coach for an Addo game drive vehicle, bringing everyone even closer to the sights and sounds of the African bush.

The highlight? A breathtaking encounter with Addo's now-famous lion cubs, a truly special sighting and one I'll remember for a long time.

Not wanting to be outdone, Addo's elephants stole the show too, happily investigating a newly dug trench created for maintenance work on a water pipeline to one of the park's watering holes. Watching these intelligent giants turn everyday park operations into their own playground was pure entertainment.

Moments like these remind us that every safari tells a different story, and nature always has a surprise waiting around the next corner.

They came for a boat ride. They left with a story. 🐋🐧

Yesterday's Whale, Dolphin & Penguin Island Cruise took our guests right into the heart of Algoa Bay — choppy seas, big skies, and a migratory humpback whale putting on a show they'll never forget. This whale had already travelled around 4,500km from its Antarctic feeding grounds just to reach these waters.

Closer to St Croix Island, calmer seas brought us face to face with a raft of African Penguins — a small but hopeful sign for a population working hard to bounce back.

This is Algoa Bay. This is what we do. 🌊

🐋🐧 Every single trip out into Algoa Bay reminds us why we do this.

Yesterday, we had the real privilege of joining guests on their very first Whale, Dolphin & Penguin Island Cruise, their first time in the Bay, and what a welcome it was!

The wind had other plans, and the waves were choppy, but Mother Nature still delivered: our guests watched migratory humpback whales breaching against the grey sky. Did you know these gentle giants travel roughly 4,500km from their Antarctic feeding grounds to reach our waters? One of the longest migrations of any mammal on Earth. 🌍

Closer to St Croix Island, the sea calmed right down, and we drifted past a raft of African Penguins, always a special sighting. St Croix once held the world's largest African penguin colony, but numbers there have dropped by around 95% since 2016. Every raft we spot feels like a small, hopeful sign for a population that's fighting hard to bounce back. 🙏

No two trips out on the Bay are ever the same, and we wouldn't have it any other way. We're endlessly thankful for days like this.

Some safari moments stay with you long after the drive is over.

During a recent stay at Longhill Lodge and Reserve in the Greater Addo region of the Eastern Cape, we witnessed something incredibly rare and raw: two male cheetahs, known locally as “The BOYS”, hunting an injured Eland.

It was emotional, intense, and a powerful reminder that nature operates by its own rules. Encounters like these are what make safaris in South Africa feel so authentic and unforgettable.
