Truitjieskraal in the Cederberg Mountains

With a good imagination you can see certain animals in the rock formations and shapes.

Dassies, baboons and the cape leopard form part of the animals that live here, apart from mice and smaller rodents, smaller buck species like the ribbok and steenbok.

These rocks, cavities and caves have been formed over ages by the work of erosion and natural elements.

Bushman Rock Art & Paintings at Truitjieskraal

A bit more than 2 and half hours drive from Cape Town.

In the Greater Cederberg region there are more than 2500 sites with rock art. San hunter-gatherer paintings are in the fine line tradition, so-called because many of the lines are thin and delicate.

Finely ground pigments from red and yellow ochre, white clay and charcoal or manganese oxide were mixed with binders such as blood, fat, egg, milk and plant juices.

The paint was applied with brushes made from hair or feathers, or even with porcupine quills.
Photographs of rock paintings reproduced on information boards in this shelter have been digitally enhanced to make them easier to see.

If damaged by people or by natural erosion, rock paintings cannot be repaired and are lost forever.
By not touching the paintings and taking care not to stir up dust or wetting them, you can help to preserye them for longer.

The rocks on the floor of the shelter have been placed under the supervision of an archaeologist. This is to protect the archaeological deposit and to prevent dust from being stirred up and settling on the paintings and causing damage to the art.
