In 1830, two German missionaries settled in a remote valley in the Cederberg. One of them was Johann Gottlieb Leipoldt. The village they founded is Wupperthal.
Nearly two hundred years later, a Leipoldt descendant walked into that same valley on foot.
On our Wupperthal Cedar Trail this October, one of our hikers brought something with her. It was a Bible that once belonged to one of the Leipoldt brothers, her grandmother’s brother. His name was Peter, he received the Bible as a Christmas present in 1886. For four days she walked past rock paintings, cedar saplings and the quiet outposts of a community her family helped shape. Then she handed the Bible over to the people of Wupperthal.
There wasn’t much to say. A family heirloom had come back to the place where the Leipoldt name first took root in this country.
We walk these trails with the Wupperthal community, not just through it. Moments like this one remind us why.
Walk Wupperthal with us.
We run three slackpacking hikes in Wupperthal, with nights in remote wild camps:
Wupperthal Cedar Trail: 5 days, about 50 km
Wupperthal66: 5 days, about 66 km
Wupperthal100: 7 days, about 100 km
Bring your own tent, or camp in style, and we’ll set up and take down your tent for you.
