DRIVERS IN PAY RISE

Effective next week, bus and truck drivers will have their monthly salaries go up following the government decision to revise upwards the drivers basic minimum wage.

The truck drivers will now be entitled to be paid ZMK4,000 from the current ZMK 3,000 monthly salary while bus drivers will get ZMK3,000 from the current ZMK2,200 under the new Minimum Wage law.

The government has also obliged the owners of buses and trucks that cross borders to pay their drivers a cross border allowance.

โ€œAn employee shall pay a driver who crosses the borer in the performance of that driverโ€™s duties, a cross border subsistence allowance of not less than thirty dollars per night,โ€ the new Statutory Instrument (SI) reads, adding that this is applicable if the employer does provide accommodation on such trips.

The law also provides that if the truck has a sleeping cabin, the employer will still be obliged to pay his drivers a cross border subsistence allowance of not less than USD20 per night.

It will be illegal for any bus or truck owners to pay their drivers below the stipulated salaries and allowances.

The Statutory Instrument No. 3 of 2025 will become law on the 10th April, 2025 under the Minimum Wages and Conditions of Employment (Truck and Bus Drivers) amendment Order of 2024.

The amended SI - under the Employment Code Act of 2019 - has been signed by Minister of Labour Brenda Tambatamba and was first published in January 2025 with an effective date in three months time.
