Although they live in water, hippos tend to do most of their grazing on land.

They may occasionally graze on aquatic plants, but prefer the short creeping grass and small green shoots of reeds that are usually found on the river banks and land surrounding the water body they call home.

Hippos in general, are herbivores. They will eat up to 40kg of grass each night and can travel up to 10 kilometers for fresh grazing.

The hippo is the third largest land animal, falling in line behind the elephant and the rhino. An adult hippo weighs between 1,500 to 1,800 kilograms and stands at about 1.5 metres tall.
