Preserving Our Heritage, Honouring Our Heroes

As preparations gather momentum for this year's Heroes Day commemorations,Manicaland Province today converged at the Manicaland Provincial Heroes Acre for the monthly Presidential Clean-Up Campaign

Provincial Heroes Acres remain sacred national heritage sites that commemorate the courage, sacrifice and selflessness of Zimbabwe's sons and daughters who dedicated their lives to the liberation struggle and the attainment of our independence.

In a significant boost to the preservation and development of the site, the Manicaland Provincial Heroes Acre has recently undergone a major facelift with the drilling and installation of a solar-powered borehole complemented by water storage tanks.This important infrastructure will provide a reliable water supply, enabling enhanced landscaping, improved maintenance and future development projects at the shrine.

As custodians of our cultural heritage, we applaud initiatives that safeguard and enhance places of national memory, ensuring they remain dignified spaces where present and future generations can reflect on the sacrifices that secured Zimbabwe's freedom.

Strengthening Museum Practice Through Knowledge Exchange

We were honoured to host our former colleague, Dr. Njabulo Chipangura, who delivered an insightful talk to Mutare museum staff on some of the most pressing debates shaping the global museum sector today.

His presentation explored topical issues including the restitution and repatriation of cultural heritage, as well as the care and stewardship of African collections housed in Western museums. These conversations remain central to the ongoing transformation of museums and the pursuit of more equitable heritage practices worldwide.

Currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Maynooth University, Dr. Chipangura brings a wealth of international experience, having worked at leading institutions such as the The University of Manchester Museum, one of the United Kingdom's foremost museums with significant African collections.

Dr. Chipangura is an accomplished scholar and researcher, and proudly began his professional journey as an Assistant Curator of Archaeology at Mutare Museum. His return to share knowledge with the institution where he once served is a testament to the enduring value of professional networks and lifelong collaboration.

Such engagements are invaluable in exposing museum professionals to emerging global trends, fostering critical dialogue, and creating opportunities for collaborative research and professional development. We look forward to strengthening these partnerships as we continue to advance heritage conservation, research, and museum practice.

The inaugural Private Primary Schools Heritage Quiz Competition was a resounding success, as 7 private schools from Mutare urban and peri-urban areas gathered at Ridgeville College for a day of learning, excitement and healthy competition.

Coordinated by the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe - NMMZ – Eastern Region, the initiative aims to broaden participation in heritage education by bringing private schools on board, complementing the existing Heritage Quiz competitions conducted through NAPH structures.

Representing the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Mr Mudehwe commended the participating schools for pioneering this important initiative and underscored the value of heritage competitions in nurturing national identity and appreciation of Zimbabwe's rich cultural heritage.

Congratulations to Academy for emerging champions of the inaugural competition, with Kiddies College finishing as first runners-up and Eastville Preparatory Schoo from Zimunya taking third place.

Preserving our heritage begins with educating the next generation.

1964 Ford Consul Cortina Mk I Estate

Not every classic car was built to race.

Some were built to build families, businesses and communities.

The 1964 Ford Consul Cortina Mk I Estate became one of Britain's most successful family cars and went on to win the hearts of motorists across Europe, Africa and beyond. Practical, economical and stylish, it represented a new generation of everyday motoring.

Manufactured in Britain, this five-seater estate is powered by a 1.5-litre engine paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, driving the rear wheels in true classic motoring fashion. Its spacious design made it ideal for family outings, business deliveries and long-distance travel.

💡 Did You Know?

The Cortina was named after the Italian alpine resort town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, which hosted the 1956 Winter Olympic Games. Ford chose the name to evoke elegance, adventure and European sophistication.

The Cortina quickly became a phenomenal success. Across its five generations, more than 4.3 million Cortinas were produced between 1962 and 1982, making it one of the best-selling British cars of all time.

The Mk I Cortina also made its mark in motorsport. High-performance versions prepared by the legendary Lotus won numerous touring car races, helping establish the Cortina as a car that combined everyday practicality with championship-winning performance.

This particular 1964 Ford Consul Cortina Mk I Estate was generously donated to Mutare Museum by Mr G. Spanos, ensuring that future generations can appreciate an automobile that shaped motoring history.

Today, it stands proudly among the transport collection at Mutare Museum, preserving an era when reliability, simplicity and timeless design defined the automobile.

The wellness of our employees remains a key priority at Mutare museum .Recently, we supported members of our team to participate in the Manicaland Provincial Wellness Programme held in Nyanga, where participants from across the province came together to promote health, teamwork and camaraderie through sport.

Representing Mutare District, our staff competed in a number of sporting disciplines, with the district emerging victorious in the soccer tournament, an achievement that reflects the spirit of teamwork, discipline and determination.

Beyond the sporting activities, the programme also provided an opportunity for participants to experience the beauty of Nyanga, one of Zimbabwe's premier tourism destination, allowing them to unwind, recharge and appreciate the country's rich natural heritage.

We believe that investing in employee wellness contributes to a healthier, more motivated and productive workforce, enabling us to continue delivering quality service to the communities we serve.

1928 Ford Model A Phaeton – The Car That Put a Nation on Wheels

Some cars are simply built to travel.Others change history.

Meet the 1928 Ford Model A Phaeton, one of the world's most iconic automobiles and the worthy successor to Henry Ford's legendary Model T.Manufactured in the United States of America, the Model A was powered by a 4-cylinder side-valve 3285cc engine, offering improved performance, reliability and comfort. It quickly became a favourite with motorists across the globe and here in Zimbabwe, it earned a reputation as one of the most popular motor cars of its time.

When this Model A rolled off the production line, it cost just £132—making motoring more accessible to ordinary families than ever before. Between 1927 and 1932, Ford produced more than 4.8 million Model A vehicles, making it one of the most successful automobiles of the early twentieth century.

The Phaeton body style, with its elegant open-top design, embodied the spirit of adventure. Long before air conditioning and modern conveniences, motorists experienced the open road with nothing but the wind in their hair and the excitement of the journey ahead.

More than 95 years later, this beautifully preserved 1928 Ford Model A Phaeton continues to tell the story of an automobile that transformed transportation and connected communities across continents.

Today, it proudly forms part of the transport collection at Mutare Museum, preserving a legacy of innovation for future generations.
