They say it’s about the journey, not the destination.” On our birthday road trip to Sedona, my daughter and I discovered that sometimes it’s both.
As we made our way west, we decided to take a quick detour through Petrified Forest National Park. We expected to see a few pieces of petrified wood, snap a couple of photos, and continue on our way. Instead, we found ourselves on a 28-mile drive through a landscape that felt almost otherworldly. Vast desert vistas stretched endlessly before us. Ancient trees, long since fallen, had transformed into stone. Layers of color painted the barren landscape, creating a scene that felt more like another planet than the Arizona desert.
What we thought would be a brief stop turned into several hours of exploration, wonder, and unexpected adventure. We weren’t prepared for desert trails or an extended visit, but I’m so grateful we embraced the detour. Because that’s often where the magic happens—in the journeys in between.
And while this unexpected stop became one of the highlights of our road trip, Sedona itself was waiting just beyond the horizon, proving that sometimes the destination really is worth the journey.
More on Sedona coming soon... Have you ever taken a detour that has become one of your favorite travel memories?
