One of Australia’s largest privately owned container logistics operators, ACFS Port Logistics, has entered external administration, just one day before a Federal Court hearing over a reported $60 million tax debt.

Specialist lender ScotPac appointed Salea Advisory as administrator on 6 August, despite ACFS stating days earlier that it had arrangements in place to repay its ATO debt in full.

The company reported revenue of around $479 million for FY2024 but recorded a $26.7 million net loss. Its FY2025 accounts have not yet been filed.

ACFS employs more than 1,500 people and operates over 300 trucks and 1,200 trailers, moving more than 850,000 TEU annually across Australia and New Zealand.

The company services major retailers including Coles, Bunnings and Kmart. There is currently no public confirmation that customer services have been disrupted.

From 3 August, fuel excise and the Heavy Vehicle Road User Charge both increase by 16 cents per litre. While the fuel tax credit remains unchanged at around 20.2 cents, the full 16-cent increase becomes a real addition to heavy vehicle operating costs.

With diesel prices already above $2/L amid global supply disruptions, the pressure on freight costs and margins is intensifying.

For supply chain leaders, the priority is action:

• Review fuel recovery mechanisms and contractual arrangements
• Check obligations under the Road Transport Contractual Chain Order
• Model the impact on cost-to-serve and network costs
• Prepare repricing communications and scenarios
• Seek advice on whether existing fuel levies meet current requirements

The key lesson? Don’t wait for costs to rise before checking whether your contracts are designed to recover them.

Two drones were spotted flying over a German military base, just two days after a drone carrying explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a major cargo hub supporting NATO operations.

The drones were detected over the Bundeswehr base in Mechernich on Thursday night, prompting military police to deploy and an investigation by local police.

The airport incident has heightened concerns over drone activity around critical infrastructure. The explosive-carrying drone was safely defused, but Germany’s interior minister described the incident as a “new quality of danger.”

Leipzig/Halle plays a key role in international freight and NATO logistics, including transporting equipment to alliance forces along Europe’s eastern flank.

Dear Valued Clients,

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mum, Linda Egan.

While many of you may not have known her personally, she was a kind, gentle and caring person whose greatest joy in life was her family – her children and grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

As we come together to celebrate her life and say our final farewell, Team Express will be closed on Wednesday, 29 July to allow our family to attend her funeral.

Global shipping costs are set to increase, with the Suez Canal Authority announcing a 12% rise in existing surcharges on transit dues for most vessels from 15 July.

The adjustment will impact a range of vessel types, including container ships, tankers and bulk carriers, adding further pressure across international supply chains.
