And just like that, we are entering our last day at Life Instyle ✨🌸

What an incredible few days it has been meeting the familiar faces of our dear stockists and welcoming gorgeous new stockists under our wings.

To be honest, I am blown away by the positive response, and so absolutely grateful to have had the opportunity to bring our Birds that make your ❤️sing to Life Instyle 💛🙏

I will shake off the tiredness and make my way back for the last day, with a pep in my step!

I’m feeling super nervous and excited about our first Life Instyle trade show, which starts this Thursday in Melbourne! ✨

It has been such an incredibly big year already, full of contrasts - small wins and big set-backs. I often joke to my husband that it feels like I’m training for the Duck Swimming World Championships (you know the saying, calm on the surface, feet paddling madly underneath!)**.

Although there is the fear of the unknown (will the event be a success for us or not), there is one thing I know: I will enjoy making new connections and meeting familiar faces.

We absolutely treasure the handful of stockists we have, many of whom have stocked our Songbirds for nearly ten years. Our Songbirds make beautiful additions to retailers who value products with meaning and story, with a little sprinkling of delight 🎶

If you know a retail store that would suit our Songbird Collection , tag them below as we would love to connect - or they can visit us at the Show!

Songbird @ Stand 3118
Life InStyle, Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton
Thursday : 10am - 6pm
Friday : 10am - 6pm
Saturday : 9am - 3pm

You can also express interest in becoming a stockist, via our wholesale website:

**Those who know me, know that I am very accustomed to paddling with fins on, and survive rather well being submerged!

Pretty as a Pink Robin 💖🌸

There is nothing more delightful than spotting this little one in the shades of a cool, fern lined forest. We have the Pink Robin the foothills of kunanyi, here in Hobart, and Mount Field is also another good spot to view them.

A petite little songbird found in the cool forests of south-eastern Australia, the Pink Robin crafts deep cupped nests from moss and feeds on spiders, caterpillars and other forest insects.

Each Songbird whistle necklace is skilfully hand-shaped from clay, fired, then hand-painted by our team of creative artisans in Thailand. Because of their handmade nature no two birds are the same, making them even more unique and delightful! ✨

New blog post has landed! ✨💛

A quirky bird in the hand 🖐️🦜
Part of the charm of our Songbirds is knowing that no two birds are exactly the same. The unique outcomes of our handmade, craft production is embraced in our range, imbuing each Songbird with quirkiness and individuality. Their uniqueness is characterised by imperfections and variations which all form the mark of the hand, and is mindfully and intentionally elevated within our craft production framework.

Watch us pack one of our online orders - a cute little Pink Galah Whistle Necklace! 💖

We pack all of our orders and products completely plastic-free using a mix of recycled and re-used packaging.

All of our branded packaging is printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper using vegetable based inks. We have worked with our Australian printer for over 10 years!

Our artisan team includes the wonderful Ao, who is not only our Production assistant but a savvy seamstress. Ao sews up our little cotton bags which provide a snug home for our jewellery.

Our pillow boxes are made from 100% recycled Kraft paper, and are sourced from - these add a little extra protection for our clay earthenware jewellery.

We re-use the bond paper that our Paperweight Whistles are wrapped in when they transit from our artisans - this is a helpful cost reduction, because we are using this raw material twice and it saves a huge amount on packaging fill.

A neat layer of Kraft Geami Wrap, before we close the box, is sourced from

We use boxes which are either re-used or sourced from as they offer free shipping of their packaging to Tasmania (free shipping to Tassie is a rarity, so this is great!).

Lastly, we use compostable / biodegradable packaging tape to close each box - ready to ship! We have sourced this tape from

Our newest Songbird Paperweight Whistle is here - with a heart-shaped face, it’s the Masked Owl 🦉💛

As ornithologist John Gould once observed, the Masked Owl is “...strictly nocturnal in its habits, as night approaches it sallies forth from the hollows of the large gum-trees, and flaps slowly and noiselessly over the plains and swamps in search of its prey...”

Each Songbird Paperweight Whistle is skilfully hand-shaped from clay, fired, then hand-painted by our team of creative artisans. Because of their handmade nature no two birds are the same, making them even more unique and characterful.

Our Paperweight Whistles feature a single note whistle and come beautifully gift-boxed, plastic free.

Today, I’m busy taking some new product shots of our Songbirds so that I can rejuvenate our website and update our catalogue.

My very first job, before I had even finished school, was designing websites (Adobe native here!), and it is incredible how much they have evolved. There is so much to consider when capturing the essence of a handmade product, and it is almost impossible to truly do a handmade product justice in the digital space.

Capturing the scale, form, texture, weight, and in our case sound of the product, is quite a skill, and it’s a constant challenge communicating these qualities in the 2 seconds people take to capture their first impression before swiping or scrolling on.

Handmade items are a sensory experience which extend beyond sight, to engage all of our senses - we use our hands and fingers to explore the form of the object, the weight and texture connects with perceptions of quality, durability and comfort, with sound and smell magical conjurers of memories.

The uniqueness of handmade, and the ability to capture its one-of-a-kind qualities is challenged by the replicative, vectorised nature of the digital space.

Each of our Songbirds, even the same design, will look and sound different - they are each individually hand-crafted from clay, and hand-painted - so a single photo of a single Songbird will never truly replace the enjoyment and satisfaction of engaging with our products in person.

It’s Monday, and we’re back to making! 🫶

After a lovely weekend we are back on the tools.

Our team of four sculptors use the start of the day to portion, weigh and work the clay depending on which Songbird they are tasked with producing. 🦜

Our trainee sculptor, who is just two weeks into their traineeship, will be shadowing our more experienced artisans, learning the craft of building consistent forms, and the intricate art of clay whistle sculpting. There is so much to learn - with an eye for detail, skill and time the key ingredients to beautifully sculpted Songbirds.

Our Songbirds don’t exist alone or singularly - we are Songbird Collection, with each Songbird relying on our collective teaming of design and multiple artisan skill-sets to be realised. Collective togetherness is at the heart of everything we do, and at the core of every Songbird. 💛🙌

Sadly, this Saturday will be our last for the foreseeable future.

Salamanca has provided an essential local connection for our Tasmanian designed & owned business for the past four years. We have loved connecting with both locals & visitors from interstate & overseas who value the uniqueness of our Songbird Collection & the delight they bring as a memento, souvenir, collectible & gift for so many occasions.

We have enjoyed the camaradery of being a part of the market stall-holder community & the social connection this has offered us personally & as a small family business.

We have been grateful to have the opportunity to promote Salamanca Market at our interstate events as a destination to re-connect with Songbird & to experience other Tasmanian small businesses. The Market is a major tourist attraction, & provides a significant platform to create stability for small businesses from across Tasmania, helping them survive incredibly difficult economic times on top of the challenging and isolating conditions of running a business in Australia’s island state.

Despite consistently attending the market over the past four years (approximately 70% of all of our weekends have been spent at the market) we have been unsuccessful in renewing our casual license to attend.

What this means is that, sadly, this Saturday will be the last time Songbird will be at Salamanca.

Although having our weekends ‘back’ will be a nice change, it is unusual given we are in the business of retail. The news has been personally difficult to process, adding to the already existing stresses of the current economic climate & pressures of running a small business.

“Songbird is not just my passion, it is something I have worked tirelessly to build over the past eleven years. It isn’t a hobby - it is my job, that I love.”

Tom and I would like to sincerely thank our regular customers for your ongoing support, encouragement & belief in the tireless work that is involved in keeping our Songbirds in flight.

If you are in Hobart & can pop down we will be at Site 23 (Davey Street end) from 8.30am - 3pm & would love to say thank you & goodbye.

With gratitude,
Alex & Tom
