Alinea Customs provide a briefing on US trade policy, and overview of the US Supreme Court’s recent decision where it was held that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) did not contain a statutory grant of authority to impose "fentanyl" and reciprocal tariffs.

Insight into the proposed procedural steps for companies seeking to claim refunds of IEEPA-related duties through US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) via the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) mechanism is outlined, including an obligation for importers to register for an electronic refund.

For importers, exporters, multinational enterprises, and customs professionals engaged in US trade, the ruling raises important considerations regarding refund eligibility, and supply-chain strategy.

It was a pleasure to attend the Arab-British Chamber of Commerce Gala Dinner on 8th December, hosted at The Biltmore Mayfair.

Over the past century Arab economies have grown on an exponential basis, driven by significant investment in infrastructure and the adoption of technologies to diversify economic ecosystems. As such, opportunities for bilateral trade and investment, and doing business have increased, strengthening the ability to forge new partnerships and pursue common goals of greater prosperity.

Speakers included Mrs Rita Massaoud, Interim CEO of the ABCC, His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Chamber and Mr Spencer Mahony, UK Deputy Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and Pakistan, Department for Business and Trade.
The evening brought together influential voices shaping this landscape, including Rita Massoud, MBA, FCIPD, Interim CEO of the Arab-British Chamber of Commerce, His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Chamber, and Spencer Mahony UK Deputy Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and Pakistan at the Department for Business and Trade.

Events like these highlight not only the strength of UK–Arab economic ties, but also the growing need for trusted, specialist education and support to help businesses navigate customs, compliance and market-entry requirements.

We look forward to playing our part in supporting organisations across both regions as they expand, invest and build the next chapter of this important partnership.

Global supply chains face rising geopolitical fragmentation, border checks are increasing, and authorities are stepping up post-clearance audits. For exporters, there are many practical challenges including getting valuation right, classifying products accurately, proving origin under FTAs, and using Incoterms® in a way that doesn’t create unnecessary tax or risk exposure.

On 16 December, Alinea Customs, in partnership with Trade Treasury Payments (TTP) and Trade Compliance professional Sylwia Nowak will host a live webinar to explore these and other exporting-related questions.

Sign up to the webinar to gain access to The Exporter’s Playbook, a white paper published by Trade Treasury Payments to support companies that participate in international trade in navigating the year ahead.

Alinea Customs recently completed an IACBAM 3003:2025 trainer induction in Prague with IACBAM | International Association for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.

Alinea Customs provides certified CBAM training to organisations preparing for the UK’s introduction of CBAM launch from 1 January 2027.

Training programmes include:

IACBAM 3002:2025 – Service Provider Training
• Product classification
• Data collection
• Governance
• Audit management

IACBAM 3004:2025 – Fundamentals
• Emissions reporting
• Monitoring and financial impacts
• Roles and responsibilities

Key insights for UK traders:

• UK CBAM includes both direct and indirect emissions, while the EU currently prices indirect emissions only for cement and fertilisers.
• Sourcing from countries with carbon pricing or ETS participation can reduce CBAM costs:
- 36 countries currently operate an ETS
- 22 additional countries are planning to implement one (ICAP, 2024)

Contact Alinea Customs at [email protected]
to discuss implementing certified IACBAM 3002:2025 and IACBAM 3004:2025 training within your organisation.

How We Helped a Global Luxury Menswear Brand with Tariff Classification across the UK, EU, and US

Relying on suppliers for tariff classification can be risky. HS codes only align for the first six digits — the rest often differ between markets. 🌍

Recently, Alinea Customs assisted a leading international menswear brand in navigating the complexities of tariff classification across multiple regions, including the UK, EU, and US.
