Norton Canes Boat Services

Norton Canes Boat Services Norton Canes Boatbuilders at Glascote Basin is a centre for narrowboat excellence, including boat building, boat fitting, maintenance, repairs, and brokerage.

You can find us on the Coventry Canal, at the heart of the Midlands canal network. Norton Canes Boatbuilders were established in 1986 when proprietor Graham Edgson took over the business from Malcolm Braine. Malcolm began building boats in 1966 and acquired a reputation for producing fine looking craft often with steel hulls and wooden cabins. Whilst working for Malcolm, Graham progressed with the

addition of steel superstructures and was working as Malcolm's foreman up until the opportunity arose to run the operation himself due to Malcolm's retirement. For the last 30 years Graham and his team have applied their engineering and fabrication skills to produce traditionally styled canal boats of fine lines, sweet curves and exquisite balance. In 2015 we moved the business to Glascote Basin on the Coventry Canal nr. Tamworth, although we still retain the moorings site at Norton Canes Docks.

MEGA BOATYARD UPDATE!

We’ve been very busy in the boatyard over the last couple of weeks, which has made it rather difficult to find time for socials… so here’s a mega update of what we’ve been up to!

🎨 Thisuldo is in the paint shop for a full repaint. There were multiple holes in the steelwork from previous window fittings, so these have all been welded up, with new holes drilled and tapped and the windows dry fitted. She’s now ready for 2-pack epoxy anti-corrosive primer followed by 2-pack high-build primers.

⚓ Genevieve is back in the water after being grit blasted. A corroded section of the stern swim join was ground out and re-welded, the top rudder bearing freed off and re-bushed, followed by 2-pack epoxy blacking. The photos show her out of the water and then being washed down ready to go back in. Her owner was so delighted that we’d cleaned the boat inside and out, he now wants to employ our cleaners! 😂

🔧 Pride of Holderness is out of the water for an engine swap, conversion from raw-water cooling to keel cooling, a full rewire and blacking.

🤝 The sale of Guv’nor has now been concluded following survey, with the survey findings addressed and a fresh application of 2-pack epoxy blacking ready for her new owners.

⚙️ We’re undertaking the installation of a Gardner 3LW into Rocket, a new build being completed here on site by Darren Aldridge.

🔥 Moose has had a new back-cabin flue pipe installed and the stove repaired, just in time for her owner to take her to the Alvecote Boat Rally this Bank Holiday weekend — where we understand he’s making very good use of it! 😂

Moose has also had a new inverter, galvanic isolator and SmartShunt fitted, along with a number of other works highlighted in her pre-purchase survey.

🛠️ Our latest new build is getting towards the final stages too. The heating, engine and electrical systems are now fully commissioned, with the final woodwork and varnishing almost complete.

And finally…

💧 WE HAVE LOTS MORE WATER IN THE CANAL! 🥳

Phew! 😅

It turns out individual posts are much less work than trying to remember everything we’ve done over two weeks!

This week we’ve got Genevieve in the blasting tunnel.

Once the blasting is complete, she’ll be having a little welding work before we get busy preparing the hull for a full two-pack epoxy treatment.

NB Peace has been out of the water for some major hull work, including over-plating the uxter plate in 6mm steel. It was a challenging job that required the steering system to be completely rebuilt.

With the steelwork complete, the new uxter plate has been protected with a two-pack coating, and the remainder of the hull has been freshly blacked.

She's now nearly ready for relaunch and back on the cut.
