From alternative fuels and cyber risk to digital systems and emissions reporting, today's maritime professionals are navigating one of the most significant periods of change in the industry's history.

As highlighted by Ajay Chaudhry, Co-CEO โ€“ Ship Management, Synergy Marine Group:
๐Ÿ’ฌ "This is not a training refresh. It is a redesign of shipboard competence."

The same transformation is reshaping how shipowners approach vessel operations, placing greater emphasis on specialist expertise, technology and operational readiness.

This striking photograph was taken from the deck of PACIFIC OPAL by Second Officer Princeley Dโ€™Mello, who is currently onboard and taking part in Synergyโ€™s annual Photo, Video and Essay Contest.

The vessel passing on the port bow is her sister ship. Same design, same owner fleet, crossing paths at sea by chance.

Princeley called the entry โ€œA Meeting of the Sisters.โ€

PACIFIC OPAL is a 113,306 DWT dual-fuel Aframax tanker built in 2021 and under Synergyโ€™s management since delivery. She runs on LNG-capable propulsion, not as a later modification, but as part of how she was built.

As June begins, this image connects closely with three important dates for shipping: World Environment Day, World Oceans Day and the Day of the Seafarer.

The sea these vessels trade across. The fuel choices shaping the future of shipping. The seafarers onboard who make complex operations work safely and responsibly every day.

Our contest entries are now being reviewed, with 30 photographs to be shortlisted for the final round. Winners will be announced on the Day of the Seafarer.

Congratulations to Polly Hummeland and the Nordfelt team, who recently won the Danish regional entrepreneurship championship and have now qualified for the national competition, with a potential path to the European finals in Riga. ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ†

Polly is one of the cadets selected and placed through our programme in Copenhagen. Together with Benazeer, Sofie, Anne and the wider Nordfelt team, she has been developing a concept focused on a growing challenge in modern navigation: maintaining resilience when GPS and satellite-based positioning systems become unreliable.

What makes this achievement especially encouraging is that the idea comes from future mariners drawing on their understanding of vessel operations and navigation at sea. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿšข

We wish the team every success in the next stage of the competition and look forward to following their journey. ๐Ÿ‘

Our thanks also to DS NORDEN for their support and engagement throughout the programme.

After months of preparation, long walks and training together, they achieved a goal they had been discussing for several years.

Congratulations to Anand and Aaral on an unforgettable adventure and a remarkable father-daughter achievement.

During her recent call at Port Botany, OOCL BRAZIL completed the largest container exchange ever recorded at the DP World terminal, handling 10,746 TEUs and surpassing the previous record of 9,487 TEUs set in 2020. โš“

For one of Australiaโ€™s busiest trade gateways, numbers of this scale reflect more than berth productivity alone. They depend on strong coordination across the port ecosystem: the terminal, vessel team, pilots, planners, shipping line, transport partners and many others working together with focus and discipline.

OOCL BRAZIL, built in 2010, has been under Synergyโ€™s management since delivery. That continuity supports familiarity with the vessel, maintenance rigour and the operational reliability that port partners, charterers and customers depend on.

We thank Capt. Dharam G. Chetri, Master, Chief Engineer M.H. Khudus and all colleagues onboard OOCL BRAZIL for their professionalism and consistency. ๐Ÿ‘

Our appreciation also goes to NSW Ports, DP World at Port Botany and all partners involved in this milestone call.

In container shipping, performance is measured in moves, schedules and capacity. It is delivered by people. ๐ŸŒ

That was one of the key questions explored by Vikas Trivedi, Co-CEO โ€“ Ship Management, Synergy Marine Group, during his session on โ€œThe 20+ Year Challengeโ€ at the Tanker Operatorsโ€™ Safety Conference 2026 in Shenzhen recently.

๐ŸŒ With a significant portion of the global tanker fleet now above 20 years of age, the industry is navigating a complex mix of:
๐Ÿ”น decarbonisation pressures
๐Ÿ”น FuelEU and CII compliance
๐Ÿ”น SIRE 2.0 expectations
๐Ÿ”น machinery reliability challenges
๐Ÿ”น lifecycle extension decisions

๐Ÿ“Š In the MR/Handy segment alone, the current replacement gap stands at more than 150 vessels.

The discussion focused on a broader operational reality: the growing mismatch between ageing systems and modern operational expectations.

Older vessels can absolutely continue to trade safely and reliably โ€” but there is a meaningful difference between a vessel that is simply old and one that is actively managed for longevity.

At Synergy Marine Group, focus on lifecycle optimisation, drydock strategy, reliability and crewing continuity has never been sharper as owners navigate increasingly overlapping technical, commercial and regulatory pressures.

The question is no longer whether ageing fleets can continue trading โ€” it is whether the systems, expertise and long-term commitment exist to manage them responsibly and well.

Nisha Mohanty is a Trainee Marine Engineer. She was the only female engineer cadet in her pre-sea training batch, and chose this career with full knowledge of what it would ask of her: the odds, the persuading of parents, and the months at sea away from everything familiar.

She chose it anyway.
In her own words: โ€œI step into the engine room each morning with a genuine sense of pride and gratitude, knowing I am living the dream I once aspired to achieve.โ€

Between engine-room duties and maintenance tasks, she sketches. Eagles in flight, drawn with the ocean behind her. ๐Ÿฆ…

It feels fitting for a young engineer who says the sea has taught her โ€œto adjust, endure and grow stronger with every voyage.โ€

Women remain significantly under-represented at sea, and we see that reality within our own ranks as well. We are not where we need to be. But we are committed to building an environment where seeing women on board is not treated as unusual, but as part of everyday maritime life.

Because the true measure of progress will be when a day like this is no longer needed to remind us what equality at sea should look like.

H.E. Mr Sandeep Chakravorty, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Indonesia, visited the Synergy Marine Group office and Training Centre in Jakarta recently. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ

Capt. Syed Nazeer Ahamed, Managing Director of Synergy Marine Indonesia, hosted the Ambassador along with the wider team.

The Jakarta office is one of the busiest hubs in the Synergy network, supporting close to 2,000 seagoing colleagues and around 70 shore-based staff. Indonesia is among the worldโ€™s leading seafarer-supplying nations, and its contribution to the global merchant fleet continues to be significant. โš“

The Jakarta Training Centre is dedicated to Indonesian maritime talent. Its programmes support foundational seafarer training, dual-fuel vessel operations and upskilling for the energy transition, helping seafarers prepare for the operational and technical demands of a changing industry.

The conversation during the visit reflected this context, covering maritime skills, safety, training, the realities of life at sea and Indonesiaโ€™s role as a centre for crewing, training and operations across Southeast Asia.

โ€œIndonesia has long been central to the global maritime workforce, and that contribution will continue to grow as the industry changes. What we are building in Jakarta is a platform to ensure Indonesian seafarers are equipped for that transition through practical training, operational exposure and long-term career development. The Ambassadorโ€™s visit was a welcome recognition of that work.โ€

Capt. Syed Nazeer Ahamed
Managing Director, Synergy Marine Indonesia.

Our thanks to H.E. Mr Sandeep Chakravorty and the Embassy of India in Jakarta, and to the Synergy Marine Indonesia team for their warmth and hospitality. ๐Ÿ™
