This time of year we often get asked how an impeller can fail during the storage season.

Marine impellers are made of a synthetic, flexible rubber like nitrile or neoprene. However these materials do eventually harden as they get older. After multiple periods of sitting in storage, an impeller will eventually fail to seal and will not pump water.

These pictures show an impeller that was functioning in the Fall, but failed to pump water this Spring. You can see the difference between an old and new impeller and also just how cramped they are inside the housing.

We recommend replacing your impellers every 2 years just because our boats spend so much time storage.
