Diesel just hit $4.86 a gallon. Freight rates are spiking. Here's what's actually happening.

Two things collided in the trucking market this month - and if you move freight for a living, you're already feeling it.

The war hit fuel hard.
U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz - the waterway that carries 20% of the world's daily oil supply. Before the conflict, diesel was around $3.75/gallon nationally. It just crossed $4.86. That's nearly a dollar jump in a single week. For owner-operators, that's not a line item - that's the difference between a profitable week and a losing one.

Washington cut the driver pool.
FMCSA's new CDL rule - effective March 16 - restricts non-domiciled commercial licenses to specific visa categories. Industry analysts estimate this could pull 10-15% of trucking capacity off U.S. roads this year. Those drivers don't get replaced overnight.

What the numbers look like right now:
📦 Dry van capacity: 93% tighter than this time last year
🚛 Real dry van rates on the ground: closer to $2.60/mile - above what the indexes are showing
❌ Tender rejection rates: closing in on 50%
