The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District provides nearly 180,000 daily passenger trips with 151 bus lines throughout the 364-square-mile service area. AC Transit provides safe, convenient, courteous and reliable service in 13 cities and adjacent unincorporated areas in Alameda and Contra Costa counties as well as carrying almost 13,500 transbay riders into San Francisco daily. On Oct 17, 1989, the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake struck. Operator Douglas Burghardt stopped the bus when the bridge collapsed right in front of him, saving everyone on board.

Buses were dispatched across the Bay Area to help thousands of stranded riders. Buses turned into bus bridges covering BART stations. Many operators volunteered to work on their day off to help recovery efforts.

The AC Transit Board of Directors, by a majority vote, approved a new collective bargaining agreement covering more than 300 employees represented by AFSCME Local 3916.

"This agreement reflects our commitment to the people who make our Transit District work every day," said Board President Diane Shaw. "Even in a challenging fiscal environment, we are balancing responsible stewardship of public funds with the need to attract and retain the experienced professionals who serve our riders and East Bay communities."

The new agreement includes phased wage increases intended to help employees keep pace with rising living costs, including 3 percent increases in the current fiscal year, FY 2027-28, and FY 2028-29. The contract also includes an adjustment to on-call pay, helping ensure qualified employees are available to respond when unexpected situations arise.
