KQED: "Traffic Is Still Way Down Across the Bay Area — But It's Making a Comeback." How does it vary between dense and the sprawl of ?

Once again, granular data tells a richer story. We’re delighted to power KQED’s analysis of the 9 Bay Area Counties heading into Memorial Day.

As in many parts of the U.S., traffic here declined ~90%, bottoming on Easter Sunday. Based on Dan Brekke's analysis, it has surged 61% from its nadir, but it is still 73% below its March 1 level. In a recent 3-part series, The Boston Globe assessed the city’s pointing to roads at capacity as the economy booms. However, metropolitan Boston does offer enough alternatives to make it a model of — and makes #5 overall on our !

Boston’s MBTA Commuter Rail is still the 3rd most-used transit system per capita in the country, and South Station is second only to Boston Logan International Airport as the area’s busiest mobility hub. Last April, City of Cambridge became the first city in the U.S. to make protected mandatory on all city streets.

City of Boston has long been walkable, and the Big Dig project to sink Boston’s central artery underground made it even easier and safer for to get around.

Caltrain recently approved a plan to run a minimum of eight trains an hour between San Jose and San Francisco, and Bay Area Rapid Transit plans to open new Silicon Valley stations. The VTA system’s new "frequent routes" plan has 20 and routes picking up every 15 minutes or fewer during weekdays.

The San Jose Bike Party, which holds a monthly social bike rides on Fridays draws 1000s of riders in Summer months and promotes bike on the 345 miles of San Jose’s and trails.

We have our fingers crossed for more progress downtown, where Google plans to build its massive headquarters, plus nearly 6,000 units of housing, more than 1,000 hotel rooms, and a “model” transit center dubbed by San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo as “The Grand Central Station of the West.”

As we count down to #1, we focus in on the City of Des Moines, which ranks #7 on our . The metro area is one of two with no APTA transit score to still make our top 10, which means they are nailing even with a handicap!

High scores and contribute to this city’s overall position. Although the DART system didn’t make American Public Transportation Association's transit-use list, the city offers extensive public transit options, including a free downtown shuttle service.

Today we highlight City of Lancaster, Pennsylvania as the “best” U.S. metro on . Lancaster has the #1 and metrics of any other city on our list.

Because VMT is weighted heavily in our rankings, the fact that Lancaster tops that category propelled it to #8 overall despite low rankings on other metrics. For example, Lancaster has only a minimal bus and shuttle transit system, which isn’t ranked by the American Public Transportation Association APTA. Few people bike or walk to work, in fact Lancaster’s pedestrian commute ranking is one of the lowest on our list. However, more than 3% of the population is Amish, many of whom travel by low-emission horse-drawn buggies.

Although not every region has the option to shift travel to this type of horsepower, Lancaster does showcase the impact of effectively managing a region’s VMT.
