With all of the flooding we experienced in town, we’ve gotten quite a few questions regarding the state of the National Park and if it’s worth it to come visit. The short answer is yes, you can absolutely come to town this upcoming weekend.

The town and park are working tirelessly to clean up the wake of this past weekends storm. We have so much gratitude for all of their efforts. The Watchman trail is still closed, however everything else (as of today) has been re-opened and opperational.

The sharing of flash flood videos was in no way meant to scare people, or induce fear. Rather, to share a natural phenomenon that can have serious consequences. These storms and flooding are something that we experience in the south west yearly. In Zion, we call it Monsoon season, and it typically spans from July through mid September. Monsoon season brings sudden and heavy thunderstorms with high concentrations of rain, which doesn’t normally occur throughout the rest of the year.

We take the weather quite seriosuly here at Zion Adventures®, and especially monitor the forecast dilligently during monsoon season. These weather patterns and their effects aren’t necessarily congruent with what you would expect if a storm hit in other parts of the country. Knowing the particularities of this region can be a lot.

Updates today after some storms and flooding in Zion and the surrounding area.

[EDIT] The Zion Narrows and all Slot canyons are closed 9/1.

[EDIT] The Pa’rus trail is open 9/2

Please know that just because trails are open, it does not imply that they are safe for all to adventure on. Today, as a team, we chose to refrain from sending Narrows Footwear packages out into the backcountry due to the heightened risk.

Yesterday, with the flooding we experienced, ABC4 came and interviewed our very own Henry Strommen about flash flooding. He chatted about how we monitor the weather, what goes into our decision making to cancel trips or refrain from sending gear on high risk days, and general flash flood information! This video is a timelapse of the Virgin River yesterday, August 31, during a storm!

As you can see, flash floods develop quickly and with minimal warning. In this particular video, you can see it begin to rain at 1:05p. By 1:15p the first signs of flooding appear, and by 1:35 the flood is in full effect.

Always check the weather before you adventure. Aside from the presence of an incoming storm, there are four warning signs that there is an incoming flash flood. Any of these four signs indicate flood.

Flash flood warning signs:
1. Rapidly rising water levels.
2. Rapid increase in current flow.
3. Sudden change from clear water to brown, muddy, and churning current.
4. Large pieces of debris floating downstream.

In the event of a flash flood, seek high ground and get out of the way of the water. Do not attempt to beat the flood out of the canyon. Remember… when it doubt, stay the heck out.

Shuttle updates incoming!! No, seriously, they’re rappelling their way to you.

The shuttle schedule changes with the seasons. Here’s what you should know if you’re planning an upcoming trip to Zion.

🚌 Current Schedule:
— First shuttle leaves the Zion Canyon Visitors Center heading up canyon at 7:00am.
— Last shuttle coming down canyon leaves the Temple of Sinawava (Stop 9) at 8:15pm.

🚌 On September 13th, the schedule changes:
— First shuttle leaves the Visitors Center at 7:00am.
— Last shuttle down canyon leaves Stop 9 at 7:15pm.

This is especially important if you’re planning a longer backpacking route that ends in the main canyon. Remember, if you miss the last shuttle it’s an 8-9 mile walk back into town.
