Medical equipment sits in an unusual position as freight.

The value is concentrated. One unit can be worth more than a container of general goods, so there is nothing to absorb a loss. Whatever happens to that item happens to the whole shipment.

And it is sensitive. These are calibrated instruments. Vibration and rough handling do not necessarily leave a mark. The damage often only appears at commissioning, once the unit is installed and the clinic is expecting to use it.

High value and high sensitivity in the same shipment means very little room for error.

Rates are levelling off. Risk has not.

Asian hub delays, tight equipment and a new fuel surcharge from 1 August mean the freight rate is no longer the number to watch. Total landed cost is.

Great morning out on the course with good company.

Thanks to John McNally, QLD Regional Manager at IFCBAA, and Chris Roberts of 3DL for making the time. Nexus' Guha Shanka (CMO) and Richard Mallon (Business Development Director) got plenty out of it, particularly the discussion on Border Force security improvements and where compliance is heading.

It's rare to get a few uninterrupted hours with people who see freight forwarding from different angles. Conversations like these pull you out of the day to day and give you a much broader view of where the industry is going.
