Wingtip Wednesday | Solomon Islands ✈️

Did you know…

The Solomon Islands is home to countless WWII stories, both above and below the sea.

More than 50 ships were sunk in Iron Bottom Sound alone — so many that the waters between Guadalcanal, Savo and the Florida Islands became known as “Iron Bottom Sound.”

In 2025, an expedition surveyed 13 wreck sites and documented four ships there for the first time — showing there are still discoveries waiting beneath these waters.

Above the sea, Henderson Field tells another part of the story. Established by Japanese forces and captured by U.S. forces in August 1942, the airfield played a key role in the Battle of Guadalcanal, with Allied aircraft operating from the field throughout the fighting.

Today, that same site is Honiara International Airport, connecting the Solomon Islands with the world.

Wingtip Wednesday | Christmas Island ✈️

Did you know...

Christmas Island is home to an estimated 100 million native red crabs — that’s around 50,000 crabs for every person living on the island.

Every year, usually around October or November, the first rains trigger millions of red crabs to begin their migration from the rainforest to the coast to spawn. The journey can take around a week, with millions of crabs moving across the island. Roads are closed, crab bridges and tunnels have been built to keep them moving safely, and even airport operations can be affected. Drivers are literally told to give way to the crabs. 🦀✈️

But while the crabs are making their annual journey across the surface, there’s a whole other world moving beneath their feet.

Christmas Island began as the peak of a volcanic seamount rising from the ocean floor, with coral reefs building up over millions of years to create the limestone cap that covers much of the island today. That limestone has created a landscape of steep cliffs, caves, sinkholes and underground waterways — and nearly all of the island’s rainfall disappears underground into its cave and karst systems.

Wingtip Wednesday | Incheon✈️

Incheon wasn’t always the landscape you see today. Incheon International Airport sits on land created by reclaiming large areas of tidal flats from the sea and connecting land around several islands.

The airport was built by reshaping the coastline itself — with around 82% of the airport site reclaimed from the sea.

Korean street food definitely has an adventurous side — from egg-and-cheese bread and spicy rice cakes to silkworm pupae, blood sausage, chicken feet and freshly prepared octopus. You’ll find some seriously unexpected dishes at Gwangjang Market, Korea’s first permanent market, established in 1905.

Wingtip Wednesday | Fiji ✈️

Did you know...

Fiji is made up of 333 islands, scattered across an enormous 1.29 million square kilometres of ocean territory — more than twice the size of metropolitan France, but the islands themselves account for only around 18,000 square kilometres of land — meaning Fiji is overwhelmingly ocean rather than land.

And within all that ocean, there’s one small stretch of ocean and reef with seven very different surf breaks. Just off Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands, the Tavarua–Namotu surf zone is home to seven legendary waves — including Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Tavarua Rights, Swimming Pools, Namotu Lefts, Wilkes Passage and Desperations. 🌊🏄‍♂️

Within this small stretch, you’ll find lefts and rights, barreling waves and powerful reef breaks — with Cloudbreak capable of producing waves up to 20 feet (6 metres) when a major swell rolls through. 🤯
